Education and student instructions

In vocational rehabilitation, workplace rehabilitation is always prioritized. If your former job or profession is no longer suitable for your health and transitioning to a new job through workplace rehabilitation is not possible, educational support may be considered. The goal of studying is to acquire a profession suitable for your health. Elo individually assesses the appropriateness of your rehabilitation plan.

On this page, you will find information for planning your education and instructions for the period of study supported by Elo.

Reporting Study Progress

Provide us with information about your study progress and enrollment as present during February and August

Here’s how:

Register as an attending student for the upcoming academic year.
Log in to My Studyinfo.
Ensure the school has updated your status as an attending student in My Studyinfo.
Go to "Share your study records" in My Studyinfo. Select "Comprehensive information on selected records" and copy the link.
Send the copied link to us via our Online Service.

The link to My Studyinfo also serves as a notification of the start of your studies. We will contact you if we need more information about your study progress. If you wish to provide us with additional information regarding your studies, you can send documents using the "Submit Attachments" feature.

If you are unable to send us the link to My Studyinfo, you can send a study certificate and transcript of records through our Online Service. Download the study certificate form >

You can work alongside your studies within the earnings limit. You can see your personal earnings limit in our Online Service. Working alongside your studies should not slow down your progress.

Instructions for students receiving vocational rehabilitation

Supported education programs

Training can be a course, vocational partial qualification, basic degree, vocational qualification, specialist vocational qualification, or university of applied sciences degree. Training can be conducted as an apprenticeship, training agreement, or in-person/remote school teaching.

Elo does not support pathway studies, open university or college studies, or other similar studies that do not lead to a degree.

Studies must be full-time. Elo can support one degree, and its duration can be up to 4 years.

Apprenticeship

An apprenticeship is always agreed upon at the local apprenticeship office. When the apprenticeship begins, submit the employment contract, apprenticeship agreement, and study certificate to Elo.

If the training is conducted as an apprenticeship, the rehabilitation benefit is paid to the employer for the salary equivalent part. Therefore, a fixed monthly salary should be agreed upon with the employer.

Apprenticeship training generally follows the guidelines related to students.

Living expenses during studies

Elo pays a rehabilitation benefit during the training period. If the training is conducted as an apprenticeship, the benefit is paid to the employer for the salary equivalent part. Additionally, we pay a standard allowance to the student to cover study costs, travel expenses, and accommodation costs in a different locality. Elo reimburses costs related to degree studies according to Tela's recommendation.

Standard allowance

The standard allowance is paid at the beginning of the autumn semester once you have submitted the link to My Studyinfo or a study certificate for the rehabilitation benefit. Elo reimburses costs related to degree studies according to Tela's recommendation.

Travel expenses

You can receive reimbursement for travel expenses related to Elo's vocational rehabilitation.

You can apply for travel reimbursements through our Online Service. Reimbursements can be claimed retroactively for up to six months.

Compensation for living in a different locality

Some rehabilitees have additional housing costs as a result of having a residence both in their home municipality and the municipality in which their rehabilitation takes place. In these cases, the additional housing costs will be reimbursed, during the months of active rehabilitation. Additional housing costs will be reimbursed for the rehabilitation months in accordance with Tela's reimbursement recommendations. The distance between home and the rehabilitation site must be at least 70 km.

Contact Elo in advance to agree on the reimbursement of additional housing costs.

Tax card

Please remember to submit your tax card, as the rehabilitation allowance and increase are subject to withholding tax.

Subsistence during the summer

Elo also pays rehabilitation benefits during the summer months. We recommend that you use the summer taking your studies forward or on practical training to be carried out during your studies.

If you only work during the summer months from June to August and your work lasts no more than three months, your summer earnings do not have an effect on the payment of the rehabilitation allowance. If you have already worked during the spring semester or will continue to work during the fall semester, send us a message in our Online Service for the revision of your earnings limit.

Working while studying and earnings limit

You can see your personal earnings limit in our Online Service. Daily allowance, mileage allowance, and meal allowance are not included in the earnings limit.

During the rehabilitation benefit period, you can be employed or run a business. However, studies must be full-time, even if you work alongside them. Working during studies should not slow down your progress.

If your earnings exceed the limit more than once a month, notify us by sending a message through our Online Service.

If you are self-employed, your earned income must not exceed the earnings limit. Contact our insurance service for income review if needed.

If you work only during the summer months (June-August) and for no more than three months, your earnings will not affect the rehabilitation allowance. If you have already worked during the spring semester or continue in the fall, send us a message in our online service for an earnings limit review.

Interruption or delay of studies

Please contact Elo's work ability specialist if your studies are interrupted or delayed. You must inform us of sick leaves longer than two weeks or if your studies do not progress according to the approved study plan. Studies must progress at the pace of the approved plan and at least 5 credits per support month, totaling at least 60 credits per year.

We monitor your study progress at the beginning of each semester. Benefits paid without cause may be reclaimed.

Graduation

Congratulations on your graduation!

We need information about your situation upon completing your studies, so please fill out the feedback in our Online Service under the Rehabilitation tab in the Feedback on Action section.

Now it's time for you to transition to working life. If you don't have a job after finishing your studies, you can get employment support from TE services. More information can be found on the TE services website.
