Earnings-related pensions will increase by approximately 1.3% on January 1, 2025

The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health has confirmed the earnings-related pension indices for 2025.

The earnings-related pension index for next year is 3077. This means that earnings-related pensions will increase by approximately 1.3 percent at the beginning of next year compared to 2024.

The increase applies to everyone receiving an earnings-related pension at the turn of the year, regardless of the type of pension, provided the pension started by December 1, 2024

The 2025 tax card is valid starting from January

Starting from 2025, tax cards will take effect at the beginning of the year, meaning the 2025 tax card is valid for pensions or benefits paid from January 1, 2025. The income limit on the tax card is calculated for the entire year, i.e., 12 months. Previously, tax cards became effective only from the beginning of February.

The Tax Administration will send the 2025 tax cards by mail by the end of December, and they will be visible in MyTax in mid-December. You can see the amount of the January pension with the tax percentage provided by the Tax Administration in Elo's online service for individual customers starting from December 20, 2024.

For more information about the change in the tax year, visit the Tax Administration at www.vero.fi.

Notification letters

The notification letter contains information about

  • the pension or benefit paid in 2024 and
  • the amount of the pension or benefit in January 2025.

The payment information in the notification letter is based on the data at the time of sending, so it may change, for example, if taxation changes during 2025.

Notification letters for pension and benefit recipients residing in Finland

The notification letters will be sent from Elo starting on December 23, 2024. If the notification letter is delivered to you only electronically, you will receive a text message from us at Elo when your notification letter is available in the online service for private customers. The letter can be found under the Documents tab.

Notification letters sent by post will be sent at the end of December to pension and benefit recipients residing in Finland.

Notification letters for those residing abroad

We will send the notification letters to pension recipients residing abroad in January 2025.

Practical guidelines for taxation at the turn of the year 2024/2025

There are a few important things related to the taxation of pensions and benefits at the turn of the year that pensioners and those receiving rehabilitation benefits should take into account.

Instructions for pensioners

If your pension was granted on or before October 31, 2024:
  • Elo will receive your tax rate for 2025 from the Tax Administration. You do not need to report your tax rate to Elo yourself.
  • From 2025 onwards, tax cards will be effective immediately from the beginning of the year, i.e., January 1, 2025, meaning your January pension will be paid with the 2025 tax rate.
  • You can see the amount of your January pension with the tax rate calculated by the Tax Administration in the online service for private customers starting December 20, 2024.

If your pension was granted on or after November 1, 2024:

  • Order a tax card calculated for the pension for 2025 in December 2024, as we do not receive it directly from the Tax Administration. Additionally, you will need your own tax card for the tax year 2024 if you receive a pension during 2024.
  • You can order a new tax card at www.vero.fi/OmaVero
  • Indicate that the payer is the Employment Pension Company Elo, so the Tax Administration will send the tax card to us at Elo.
  • If too much tax is withheld from your pension starting January 1, 2025, we will refund the excess amount to you as a tax refund approximately one week after the tax card arrives at Elo.

Tax and account changes related to the payment of the January 2025 pension must be with Elo by December 18, 2024.

Instructions for benefit recipients

Regardless of when the benefit starts:

  • Request a tax card calculated for the benefit for 2025 from the Tax Administration by December 18, 2024. From 2025 onwards, tax cards will be effective immediately from the beginning of the year, i.e., January 1, 2025, meaning your January benefit will be paid with the 2025 tax rate.
  • Indicate that the payer is the Employment Pension Company Elo, so the Tax Administration will send the tax card to us at Elo.
  • Without a tax card for 2025, we will withhold tax from the benefit amount depending on the amount, ranging from 20-50%, and once the benefit tax card is received, we will refund the excess tax withheld.
  • Check the year-end notification letter you receive at the end of December.

Student: remember to provide us at Elo with information about the progress of your studies during February. Learn more about the notification instructions >
